You do not need to dress as if you are going to a premium nightclub just to walk around Khao San Road.
Sukhumvit is different.
If you are going around areas such as Thonglor, Ekkamai, or Sukhumvit Soi 11, smart casual is usually the safer direction. That does not mean you need a suit. A clean shirt, polo, fitted T shirt, trousers or good jeans, and proper shoes will normally fit the environment much better.

People sometimes hear smart casual and immediately think they need to dress like they are going to a business dinner.
You really do not.
For men, something as simple as a fitted plain T shirt with dark trousers and clean sneakers can already work well for many Bangkok nightlife venues. A casual button up shirt gives you a slightly sharper look without making you feel overdressed.
